Sunscreen explained

If you only use one skincare product, make it sunscreen. It protects against sunburn, dark spots and the early signs of aging. Korean sunscreens are loved because they feel light, leave no white cast and sit well under makeup.

SPF: protection from UVB

SPF measures protection from UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn. For everyday use, choose SPF 30 or higher. Korean sunscreens are often labeled SPF50+.

PA: protection from UVA

PA is the rating used in Korea and Japan for UVA rays, which reach skin even on cloudy days and through windows. UVA contributes to dark spots and the look of aging. The more plus signs, the more UVA protection:

  • PA+ some UVA protection
  • PA++ moderate UVA protection
  • PA+++ high UVA protection
  • PA++++ very high UVA protection

For daily wear, look for SPF50+ PA++++.

Chemical, mineral or hybrid?

Chemical (organic) filters absorb UV light. They usually feel very light and leave no white cast.
Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and reflect UV light. Often a good choice for sensitive skin.
Hybrid sunscreens use both. The best sunscreen is the one you'll happily wear every day.

How to apply it

  • Use enough. About a quarter teaspoon for your face, or two finger-lengths for face and neck.
  • Make it the last skincare step in the morning, before makeup.
  • Reapply every 2 hours when you're outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
  • Wear it every day, even when it's cloudy or you're mostly indoors near windows.
  • Remove it at night with an oil cleanser first. Shop oil cleansers

Finding your texture

Oily skin: gel or fluid sunscreens with a matte finish.
Dry skin: cream or essence sunscreens with a dewy finish.
Sensitive skin: mineral or fragrance-free formulas.
